What does that make the rest of us? Non-professional? Why do we do this to ourselves? I think it is time to quit “going along.” Why do we take this lying down? I’m not sure why our professional organization would designate only the baccalaureate level as professional. I feel the hundred thousand plus technologist out there producing quality medical images in a caring, safe way are also professional.
Thank you ASRT for making us feel inferior.

A fantastic program, beautiful area and fabulous, a fabulous hotel all combined to make the annual conference held November 1, 2 and 3 a great success! Now, I know I am the coordinator but I am also a customer. The food was truly to die for (we may in fact die due the sheer excess - yummy), the service was friendly and courteous and the atmosphere was very elegant. I think we work hard all year long and we deserve the kind of treatment we received at the Otesaga. As always, you get what you pay for!

This past Sunday a young player for the Buffalo Bills football team suffered a spinal injury that required routine films, CT, MRI and surgery under fluoro guidance, every step of his treatment included our participation. The fantastic young physicians that are treating him have held two extensive press conferences describing his treatment and condition. They have been so gracious in acknowledging the team that has played a role in this treatment, including the imaging staff. Hats off to Dr. Cappucino for being so gracious and generous in his reporting. It isn’t often that anyone thinks to mention us.

In considering the slow progress of the CARE bill (although I understand these things take time) one can only be mystified by the speed with which some other bills get quick action. I have come to realize that it is because the “politicians” get nothing out of the CARE bill passing. It isn’t headline grabbing or sexy. There is no Julia Roberts movie that can be made from it. It doesn’t bring them the scads of money (that they desperately feed off of). It is just a patient safety issue from our point of view. I’m sure it will pass some day but that day will be as slow to come as they milk ASRT and it’s membership for $$$ year after year. That’s our system. Yuk!

This endless pursuit of the CARE/RADCARE bills in DC is frustrating. While the big glamorous day RT in DC is fun and makes everyone feel enthusiastic it is probably a less effective method of lobbying than contacting your reps and senators at the local level. This is the time of year when they all come home for picnics, parades, lawn fetes and so on. They will be everywhere. DO NOT be afraid to politic with them at these events. Remember, these men and women are NOT our leaders, that right is reserved to the Executive branch. These people are our REPRESENTATIVES, there to serve YOU. DO NOT fear them. The myth that they are somehow above us is perpetrated by DC insiders who only know the “game”. Respectfully throw numbers at them like the number of techs in their voting district who support the bills. Politics is blood sport.

Hey, I saw a funny Radiologic faux pas the other night when I rented the movie Pursuit of Happiness. For those of you who have not seen it, the main character is employed selling portable bone density machines. In one scene he is shaking the hand of a Doc that just bought a unit. The docs hand is extended over one of those dutch doors where the bottom half is closed. Anyway, in the background is a lightbox with an LS Spine film hanging upside down! Stuff like that just cracks me up. Don’t they hire consulants to catch those mistakes? Other than that, it is a pretty good film.

I wasn’t at all surprised by the report in the New England Journal of Medicine that Computer Aided Detection is creating a lot of follow-up biopsies that are negative. The AP report started with the line “it appears that traditional mammography readers” (I believe they meant human physicians) were more accuarate……
Of course the supporters of CAD, most likely the manufacturers, jumped on the story to defend the technology.
It has been my opinion for a long time that we jumped into all of this technology too fast. It was pushed by the companies.

Hi everyone,
>> I know that in the HOD, I mentioned this technology when I
>> first read about its development. Now that it is here - I want to
>> again bring up the issue of “_applying ionizing radiation to humans_”
>> (which is the way NY has our profession described in the NYS law.)
>> This technology would not fly (no pun intended) in NY because of the
>> way our law is written….the person operating this device would need to be a radiographer.
>> I do not recall if AZ is a licensure state - but if it is - then
>> we have the public volunteering for an x-ray - no matter how small
>> the radiation - without a radiographer performing the procedure. I
>> not believe the baggage / people at the airport security have what it takes.
>> The other issue is that this is not a mandatory screening
>> the terrorist law to allow untrained persons to apply radiation to
>> humans - since it is not being done in any effective manner…it makes no sense.
>> There is a place for comments on this web site (look for
>> “contact
>> us”)- I suggest everyone going to it to voice their opinions on this
>> issue and those of you who are still delegates, please consider
>> bringing it up on the floor of the house this year (late
>> resolution???)- the ASRT needs to determine if this is safe practices
