Fired Up for Forensic Radiology

The field of forensic science has played an increasingly significant role in the investigation and resolution of criminal activities. As modern technology advances, it presents new opportunities for solving complex cases and enhances the efficiency of forensic investigations. One of the revolutionary developments in contemporary forensic science is the utilization of imaging techniques, particularly forensic radiology. As radiologists, radiologic technologists, professionals, and students, understanding the potential of forensic radiology is essential for fostering inter-professional collaboration and driving the discipline forward.

Abstract:

Forensic Radiology is a field of medical imaging that provides valuable service to the community via data-driven techniques in imaging and forensic science. Forensic radiology leverages imaging modalities, including x-ray, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), for the identification, analysis, and documentation of physical evidence found at crime scenes and on human remains. The applications of forensic radiography are expansive, from documenting findings during post-mortem examinations to locating foreign objects and trajectories. Textbook authors and the ASRT now recognize Forensic Radiography as an educational pathway and a specialized training area. This new and topical subject is essential for educators and very interesting to educators, technologists, and students alike. In this presentation, we will examine the modalities that provide the best application and explore case studies.

Objectives:

  • 1.    Explore the use of virtual autopsy as a complementary practice to conventional autopsy.
  • 2.    Examine the data leading to scrutiny in forensic science.
  • 3.    Analyze the value of CT and MRI in forensics and law enforcement.
  • 4.    List the benefits that radiology lends to anthropology, law enforcement, and the justice system.
